Holistic Ergonomics

Freedom of Movement

While international ergonomic guidelines offer a baseline, we innovate beyond these parameters to include "holistic ergonomics"—the approach of designing products that encourage free expression, creativity and engagement in the workplace. Holistic ergonomics recognizes that there is not one right way to sit and that a chair should support as many postures as possible, as well as be comfortable, responsive and easy-to-use. The Generation by Knoll family of chairs responds to the way people really sit, using innovative materials and design solutions that deliver comfort and support.

How Do We Sit?

In today's workplace, people need to shift seamlessly from individual, focused work to collaborative work, often many times a day. There is a premium placed on the freedom to move. Current research on seating challenges the idea of a single, correct posture, recognizing that maintaining one seated position for an extended time is not compatible with the body's natural tendency toward movement known as "free posturing." Fidgeting—and even stretching, leaning and reclining—are not merely physical tics intended to relieve stress, but rather essential activities allowing us to focus, interact and communicate more effectively. The Generation by Knoll family of chairs encourages natural movement and facilitates a range of postures, including side sitting.

What Should A Chair Do Today?

Ergonomist Tim Springer has noted that current ergonomic research on seating "finally recognizes there is no correct posture and no one 'right way' to sit." Springer suggests that today's work chairs should support a wide array of work activities, be intuitive, explore and apply the latest technologies and maximize environmental intelligence. In short, to Springer, a chair's responsiveness is critical. Its ability to accommodate changes in posture and position without the use of controls or levers is imperative. The Generation by Knoll family achieves this on many levels.
